Annual Staff Bonus Accrual
Accruing the year-end performance bonus for all eligible telecom employees.
| Account Name | Type | Debit ($) | Credit ($) |

| Bonuses Payable | Liability (+) | - | 500,000.00 |
💡 Accountant's Note
Year-end bonuses are accrued in the performance period and paid in Q1 of the following year. Accrual ensures the expense is matched to the year the performance was delivered.
Practitioner & Systems Framework
💻 ERP Architecture
The bonus accrual is posted as a year-end top-side journal based on management's estimate of the total bonus pool, which is typically determined by the Board compensation committee. The accrual is allocated to cost centres based on each department's headcount and average salary. When bonuses are approved and paid through payroll in Q1, the accrual is reversed and replaced by the actual payroll entries. SSC on bonus payments must also be calculated and provisioned. For listed telecoms, executive bonus disclosures are required in the remuneration report.
⚠️ Audit Flags
Auditors assess whether the bonus accrual represents a constructive obligation at year-end — has the employee been communicated their bonus entitlement? Test the accrual methodology against the bonus scheme rules. Confirm the accrual is allocated to the correct period (the year of performance, not the year of payment). Review the Board's approval of the bonus pool. Test SSC on the bonus accrual. For listed entities, confirm remuneration disclosures are complete and consistent with the underlying accrual.
📄 Required Documentation
Bonus scheme rules, Board or compensation committee approval of the bonus pool, accrual calculation by department, SSC calculation on bonus, payroll records for Q1 bonus payment, reversal journal, and remuneration report disclosures for listed entities.
