Retail commissions are variable selling costs linked to sales performance. They are expensed in the period earned. These are separate from dealer commissions paid to third-party distribution channels.

Internal retail staff commissions are calculated by the retail performance management system based on each store and individual's target attainment (activations, handset sales, plan upgrades). The commission calculation is validated against the CBS activation data before payment. Commissions are processed through the payroll system as variable pay and are subject to income tax withholding and SSC. The expense is allocated to the retail channel cost centre. Unlike dealer commissions, internal staff commissions are not assessed for IFRS 15 CAC capitalisation — they are not incremental costs to obtain individual contracts.
