💡 Accountant's Note
Network depreciation is the largest expense line for most telecoms. 4G equipment typically depreciates over 7-10 years. High depreciation drives the classic telecom EBITDA focus rather than net profit.
Practitioner & Systems Framework
💻 ERP Architecture
Network depreciation is calculated by the fixed asset module automatically for each asset, using the configured useful life per asset category (radio access network: 7–10 years, transmission: 10–15 years, core network: 7–10 years, IT systems: 3–5 years). Monthly depreciation journals are generated in batch and posted to the GL. The depreciation run is reconciled to the asset register. Technology refresh decisions are informed by the residual net book value of existing equipment — accelerated write-downs may be required when technology is retired early.
⚠️ Audit Flags
Auditors test the useful life assumptions against industry norms and the operator's own technology refresh history. If the operator is deploying 5G, remaining 4G equipment useful lives should be reassessed — an unrealistically long residual life overstates asset values. Test that fully depreciated assets still in service are disclosed. Review the useful life policy for consistency across all sites. Confirm that accelerated depreciation on assets being replaced or decommissioned is recognised promptly.
📄 Required Documentation
Fixed asset register with asset categories and useful lives, monthly depreciation run report, useful life policy document, technology refresh plan, accelerated depreciation calculations for assets being decommissioned, and EBITDA-to-EBIT bridge in management accounts.
