💡 Accountant's Note

IoT revenue is high-volume, low-ARPU (Average Revenue Per User). Millions of connected devices generate reliable recurring revenue. The key metric is the cost per SIM rather than per-subscriber revenue.

Practitioner & Systems Framework

💻 ERP Architecture

IoT/M2M contracts are typically enterprise agreements covering large numbers of SIMs with very low individual monthly fees (a few cents per SIM per month). Billing is generated from the M2M platform based on active SIM counts or data consumption. Revenue is recognised monthly per the active SIM count. The M2M platform tracks SIM lifecycle (active, suspended, terminated) and feeds billing data to the CBS. IoT revenue is presented in a separate business unit segment from consumer mobile. The cost structure for IoT is primarily network capacity (low incremental cost per SIM), making it a high-margin revenue stream at scale.

⚠️ Audit Flags

Auditors reconcile the active SIM count in the M2M platform to the billed revenue. Test that suspended or decommissioned SIMs are not billed. For large IoT contracts with minimum commitment levels, assess whether the minimum commitment should be recognised even if actual usage is below the minimum. Confirm that eSIM-based IoT connections are correctly captured in the platform. Review the contract asset/liability position for IoT contracts with upfront device activation fees.

📄 Required Documentation

M2M platform active SIM count report, monthly billing reconciliation (SIM count × rate), enterprise IoT contract with minimum commitments, eSIM activation records, cost-per-SIM analysis, IoT segment revenue and margin report, and AR aging for IoT enterprise customers.
