💡 Accountant's Note
Accessories are high-margin, low-ticket items sold at the point of handset purchase or separately. Revenue is recognized at point of sale — a single, simple performance obligation.
Practitioner & Systems Framework
💻 ERP Architecture
Accessories inventory is managed separately from handsets in the inventory system, using the same POS integration. Each accessory SKU (stock keeping unit) is assigned a standard cost (or weighted average cost). POS transactions automatically trigger inventory reduction and COGS recognition. Accessories are typically imported and stocked centrally, then distributed to retail stores. Minimum stock levels are configured in the inventory system to trigger automatic replenishment orders. Accessories may also be sold through the online store — e-commerce sales are reconciled to the inventory system.
⚠️ Audit Flags
Auditors test the accessories physical count at year-end and reconcile to the inventory system. Confirm that accessories returns are processed as revenue reversals with inventory reinstatement. Review the accessories gross margin — a declining margin may indicate shrinkage (theft), pricing errors, or incorrect COGS calculation. Test that accessories purchased bundled with handsets (e.g., earbuds included in box) are correctly included in the handset cost rather than separately inventoried.
