Data overage is tracked in real-time by the OCS, which monitors each subscriber's data consumption against their plan allowance. When the allowance is exhausted, the OCS either applies the overage rate automatically or notifies the customer and requires them to opt in. Overage charges are billed at month-end as part of the postpaid invoice. The CBS generates the overage charge and posts it to the AR sub-ledger. Revenue is recognised when the usage occurs, confirmed by CDR data.

Auditors test overage revenue by reconciling CDR data to billed overage charges. Confirm that the overage rate applied matches the subscriber's tariff. For regulators that cap data overage charges, verify that the operator is compliant with the regulatory ceiling. Test that customers who have purchased additional data packs mid-month are not also charged overage for the same period. Review the volume of overage disputes — high dispute rates indicate billing accuracy issues.
