💡 Accountant's Note

Just like tuition, ticket sales for football or basketball seasons are liabilities until the games are actually played.

Practitioner & Systems Framework

💻 ERP Architecture

Season ticket sales are processed through the athletic department's ticketing system (e.g., Paciolan, Tickets.com, or a custom platform). Cash received is posted to a deferred athletic revenue liability. Revenue is recognised on a per-game basis as each event occurs — if there are 10 home games and the season ticket covers all 10, 1/10th of the revenue is released per game. Cancelled games require immediate refund or credit. The ticketing system feeds daily settlement data to the GL.

⚠️ Audit Flags

Auditors reconcile total season ticket revenue to ticket system reports and confirm the recognition schedule matches the game calendar. If games are cancelled or rescheduled across a fiscal year-end, the cut-off treatment requires careful review. Verify that the deferred balance at year-end represents only unsatisfied performance obligations (games not yet played). Confirm that complimentary tickets (given to players, staff, or donors) are properly tracked and excluded from revenue.

📄 Required Documentation
