💡 Accountant's Note
Media rights are a major revenue stream for large university athletic departments. Revenue is recognized over the course of the playing season.
Practitioner & Systems Framework
💻 ERP Architecture
Media rights contracts are multi-year agreements typically negotiated at the conference level and distributed to member institutions. The annual entitlement is recognised ratably over the season (or per-game for game-specific rights). Revenue is posted in the athletic department's auxiliary cost centre. For multi-year contracts, the total contract value is allocated to each year based on the expected games/events in that year. Upfront signing payments are deferred and recognised over the contract term.
⚠️ Audit Flags
Auditors confirm the contract terms and verify that revenue is recognised in the correct period — amounts relating to games played after year-end must be deferred. Test that conference distribution amounts match the institution's entitlement calculations and conference financial statements. For large upfront payments, verify the deferral and recognition schedule. Assess whether any contingent revenue (performance bonuses for conference championships) has been recognised before the performance condition is met.
📄 Required Documentation
Signed media rights agreement (or conference distribution agreement), revenue allocation schedule by game/season, cash receipt or distribution confirmation, deferral schedule for pre-season payments, and athletic auxiliary financial statements.
