💡 Accountant's Note

The collective ECL provision covers the entire performing loan portfolio using a statistical model. The net movement (increase or decrease in the provision) is recognized in P&L. This is distinct from individual (Stage 3) provisions which are calculated case-by-case.

Practitioner & Systems Framework

💻 ERP Architecture

The collective ECL model typically runs outside the core banking system (in a risk modeling platform or Excel model fed by a CBS data extract). Results are uploaded back to the CBS/GL as a month-end journal entry. Oracle OBCL and SAP Credit Risk Analyzer can host the model calculations natively for banks with advanced implementations.

⚠️ Audit Flags

External auditors perform model validation annually and test key assumptions (PD by segment, LGD by collateral type, EAD factors for undrawn commitments, macroeconomic overlay). CBJ examiners compare the bank's ECL coverage ratio against industry peers and challenge outliers.

📄 Required Documentation

ECL model technical documentation, monthly model run output, macro-economic overlay approval (ALCO/BRC minutes), sensitivity analysis, independent model validation report, and reconciliation of ECL balance movement to P&L.
