💡 Accountant's Note

Cash shortages are more concerning than overages and may indicate teller error or theft. The shortage is recorded as a receivable (from the teller) pending investigation. If confirmed as a loss, the amount is expensed and may be recovered from the teller's personal bond/guarantee.

Practitioner & Systems Framework

💻 ERP Architecture

Same process as overages but with opposite treatment. In some banks, tellers are held personally responsible for shortages above a de minimis threshold. HR policy and labor law (Jordan) governs whether teller shortages can be deducted from salaries — this requires written teller acknowledgment.

⚠️ Audit Flags

Auditors track the frequency and amount of teller shortages by branch. Systematic shortages from the same teller are flagged for potential fraud investigation. Internal Audit may conduct unannounced cash counts in branches with high shortage frequency.

📄 Required Documentation

Cash count sheet, branch manager investigation report, teller's written acknowledgment (if responsible), HR action taken, and resolution documentation.
