Credit/Debit Card Annual Membership Fee
Charging a cardholder the annual card membership fee.
| Account Name | Type | Debit ($) | Credit ($) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cardholder Account (Debit) | Asset/Liability (−) | 60.00 | - |
| Card Annual Fee Income (Deferred) | Liability (+) | - | 60.00 |
💡 Accountant's Note
Annual card fees are recognized over the 12-month membership period, not all at inception. The upfront charge is deferred and released monthly at JOD 5/month. This matches the revenue to the period in which the cardholder has access to the card service.
Practitioner & Systems Framework
💻 ERP Architecture
In card management systems (Temenos, FIS, Mysis), annual fee billing and deferral are handled within the card product definition. The GL interface posts the full fee to deferred income on billing date and releases it monthly. Some banks use simplified straight-line recognition where the fee is recognized evenly over 12 months.
⚠️ Audit Flags
Auditors test the revenue recognition policy against IFRS 15. The performance obligation is continuous access to the card service — revenue should be recognized over time. Recognizing the full annual fee on day one is incorrect under IFRS 15 and is a common finding in smaller banks.
📄 Required Documentation
Card product terms and fee schedule, billing date and amount confirmation, deferred fee amortization schedule, and reconciliation of deferred card fee balance to active cardholders.
