💡 Accountant's Note

Pharmaceutical products are typically sold with a right of return within 6 months of expiry. Returns are estimated based on historical return rates by product and provisioned at the time of sale. Returns from products with short shelf life, slow uptake, or competitive market changes can be material.

Practitioner & Systems Framework

💻 ERP Architecture

Returns provisions are calculated in the RDM system based on historical return rates (returns as a percentage of gross sales, typically by product age cohort). Products nearing expiry generate higher expected return rates. The provision is posted at the time of sale and reversed when actual returns are processed. Physical returns are managed through the 3PL returns processing centre — accepted returns generate a credit memo in the ERP. Destruction of returned products (where re-sale is not permitted) is expensed. For newly launched products with no returns history, the provision rate is estimated using analogous product data.

⚠️ Audit Flags

Auditors test the returns provision rate against rolling actual returns data. For new products (< 2 years since launch), the lack of historical data makes the provision highly uncertain — auditors assess the adequacy of management's estimate and whether a constraint on revenue recognition is appropriate (IFRS 15 variable consideration constraint). Test that returned products are properly derecognised from inventory or written off. Assess whether any large returns from a specific wholesale account indicate a broader demand signal warranting provision strengthening.

📄 Required Documentation

Returns provision calculation (historical return rate by product), product expiry date distribution, actual returns register (matched to original sales lot), credit memo processing records, destruction certificates for returned product, new product launch returns estimate methodology, and returns provision roll-forward.
