💡 Accountant's Note

For agents who act as intermediaries, only the fee is revenue (Net Basis) — not the total freight cost.

Practitioner & Systems Framework

💻 ERP Architecture

A freight forwarder acting as an agent (not controlling the underlying transportation service) recognizes only the forwarding commission as revenue — not the gross freight amount. This is the net presentation under IFRS 15. Key agent indicators: the shipping line sets the ocean freight rate, the forwarder cannot substitute an alternative carrier, and the forwarder bears no inventory or credit risk on the freight service itself. Under this model, the forwarder's revenue is: the commission or handling fee less any specific costs (documentation, file opening). The total freight amount paid by the client and remitted to the carrier flows through the balance sheet only (see logistics-customs-duties-agency-pass-through).

⚠️ Audit Flags

Auditors test the principal vs. agent classification — if the forwarder controls the freight service (selects the carrier, takes credit risk, can substitute carriers), it should present gross. Many forwarders use a hybrid model — they act as principal on some routes (where they have contracted space) and agent on others. The revenue presentation must be consistent with the actual commercial arrangement for each shipment. Under-reporting revenue (net presentation when the company is actually a principal) understates both revenue and margin.

📄 Required Documentation

IFRS 15 principal vs. agent assessment per transaction type, forwarding agreement with client (fee basis), ocean freight booking confirmation (showing the forwarder's role), freight commission invoice, net revenue posting, and freight amount flow-through the balance sheet (if agent).
