Cross-docking is a high-value service — goods move from the inbound dock to the outbound dock within hours (typically under 24 hours) without entering standard storage. The service fee is a throughput-based charge: per pallet cross-docked, per unit, or per truck processed. Recognize revenue when the cross-dock operation is complete (goods loaded onto the outbound truck). Labor is the primary cost (see logistics-picking-packing-labor-allocation) — the labor cost per pallet for cross-docking is higher than storage but the revenue per pallet is also higher due to the value-added nature. Track throughput volumes and cross-dock processing time (turnaround per truck) as KPIs.

Auditors verify cross-dock billings are supported by documented throughput records — WMS scan data (receiving scan, outbound scan) confirms the cross-dock event occurred and the volume processed. Any goods that were supposed to be cross-docked but ended up in storage (and billed as cross-dock) are a billing misstatement. The service agreement must specify what qualifies as cross-docking vs. standard put-away and order fulfillment.
