Practitioner & Systems Framework

💻 ERP Architecture

Franchise royalty fees (typically 4–8% of Room Revenue for major hotel brands) are calculated on Room Revenue only — not Total Revenue. This is a key distinction from the management base fee. Under USALI, franchise royalties are classified under Undistributed Operating Expenses: Franchise Fees. Track separately from the Global Marketing Fund assessment (see hospitality-brand-marketing-assessment) — they are separate fee streams under the franchise agreement. The franchise agreement also typically requires minimum performance standards (product quality, guest scores) as a condition of continued franchise rights.

⚠️ Audit Flags

Auditors verify the royalty rate and calculation base (Room Revenue) against the current franchise agreement. Franchise fee rates may escalate annually — check for rate changes. The total franchise cost (royalties + marketing assessment + loyalty assessment) typically represents 9–14% of Room Revenue — a significant profitability impact that management must track. Franchise agreements also have termination provisions that may create significant financial exposure if the hotel exits the brand.

📄 Required Documentation

Franchise agreement (royalty %, applicable revenue base, payment terms), monthly Room Revenue calculation, royalty fee calculation, brand invoice, payment confirmation, total franchise cost as % of Room Revenue analysis, and brand performance standard compliance records.
