💡 Accountant's Note
Most brands charge a fixed % of room revenue to pay for the 'Big Picture' marketing that individual hotels cannot afford on their own.
Practitioner & Systems Framework
💻 ERP Architecture
The Global Marketing Fund (GMF) or Brand Marketing Assessment (typically 1–3% of Room Revenue) funds: the brand's central website and booking engine, global advertising campaigns, loyalty program marketing, and brand development. Classified under Undistributed Operating Expenses: Marketing Fees in USALI. Calculate monthly on Room Revenue (not Total Revenue — the base is the same as the royalty fee but the rate is separate). Accrue monthly; the brand invoices quarterly or annually. Together with the royalty fee and loyalty assessment, this makes up the total brand cost to the hotel.
⚠️ Audit Flags
Auditors verify the GMF rate against the franchise agreement and that it is calculated only on the eligible revenue base (Room Revenue). Some franchise agreements allow hotels to receive audited GMF expenditure reports from the brand — auditors may review these to confirm the brand is spending the assessments on qualifying marketing activities. The GMF cannot be withheld even if the hotel is dissatisfied with brand marketing effectiveness.
📄 Required Documentation
Franchise agreement (GMF rate, eligible base, spending commitments), monthly Room Revenue calculation, GMF assessment calculation, brand invoice, payment confirmation, Due to Brand aging, total brand cost analysis (royalty + loyalty assessment + GMF as % of Room Revenue), and brand marketing expenditure report (if available).
