💡 Accountant's Note
Cabin upgrades sold at the gate, on the app, or at check-in are ancillary revenue recognized at the point of flight departure. The passenger's original ticket (economy) retains its ATL entry and is released on flight departure; the upgrade fee is additional revenue for the higher-class seat delivered on the same flight. Upgrades using miles are a FFP redemption.

Upgrade revenue is tracked in the ancillary revenue module of the revenue accounting system. Gate upgrades and online bids (dynamic upgrade auctions via systems like Plusgrade or Upgrade Academy) are processed at the time of payment. The upgrade amount is a separate revenue stream from the base ticket — it is recognized on flight departure for pre-paid upgrades, or immediately for at-gate upgrades (service delivered simultaneously). The original economy ticket ATL remains unchanged — only the class of service for the flight is modified in the PSS.
