💡 Accountant's Note

Baggage fees collected at check-in are recognized immediately at the point of departure — the service (transporting the bag) is delivered simultaneously with the flight. Baggage fees pre-purchased online are part of the ATL and released on flight completion. Ancillary revenue is increasingly the most profitable component of low-cost carrier revenue, often exceeding base fare revenue.

Practitioner & Systems Framework

💻 ERP Architecture

Baggage fees collected at airport check-in are processed through the departure control system (DCS) or airport POS terminals and fed to the revenue accounting system for immediate revenue recognition. Pre-purchased baggage fees collected online at the time of booking are included in the ATL and released on flight operation (same as the base fare). The revenue accounting system must correctly bifurcate at-airport ancillary fees (recognize on day of collection) from pre-booked ancillary fees (recognize on flight departure). Baggage revenue is tracked separately from passenger ticket revenue in the management accounts.

⚠️ Audit Flags

Auditors test the completeness of at-airport ancillary revenue by reconciling check-in system records to the revenue posting. Confirm that pre-booked ancillary fees are correctly included in the ATL and released on departure. Test that airport baggage revenue is not double-counted against pre-booked baggage. Review the baggage fee rate schedule across routes and booking classes for consistency with the published tariff.

📄 Required Documentation

DCS baggage fee records by flight and date, pre-booked ancillary ATL balance, baggage revenue recognition policy (at-airport vs. pre-booked), ancillary revenue disaggregation report, fee rate schedule by route, and year-on-year ancillary revenue analysis.
