💡 Accountant's Note

When a frequent flyer member redeems miles for an award ticket, the airline fulfils its performance obligation. The deferred revenue attributable to those miles is released to passenger revenue (or FFP redemption revenue) when the award flight is operated. The revenue recognized equals the fair value allocated to those miles at the time they were issued or sold.

Practitioner & Systems Framework

💻 ERP Architecture

Award ticket redemptions are tracked in the loyalty management system. When the award flight departs, the system releases the FFP liability for the redeemed miles and recognizes the revenue. The revenue amount per redemption = (miles redeemed / total miles expected to be redeemed) × total deferred FFP liability — using the proportionate method. Award seats may be operated on the airline's own flights (zero incremental cost of carriage since the seat would otherwise be empty — 'opportunity cost' logic) or on partner airlines (requiring a cash outlay to the partner at a negotiated award rate).

⚠️ Audit Flags

Auditors test the FFP redemption revenue calculation against the loyalty system records. Confirm that the proportionate breakage method is consistently applied — each redemption releases both the miles' deferred revenue and a proportionate share of expected breakage revenue. Test that award flights operated on partner carriers have the partner cost properly accrued. Review the 'points devaluation' events (where the airline increases the miles required for an award) — these reduce the effective per-mile liability and may trigger immediate breakage revenue recognition.

📄 Required Documentation

Loyalty management system redemption report (flights, miles redeemed, member accounts), FFP liability release calculation (proportionate method), partner award cost accrual, breakage recognition schedule, miles devaluation event documentation, and FFP liability roll-forward.
