Superfund (CERCLA) Potentially Responsible Party (PRP) Accrual
Recording a liability for the company's share of cleanup costs at a 'Superfund' site formerly used for disposal.
| Account Name | Type | Debit ($) | Credit ($) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Legal & Remediation Loss | Expense (+) | 450,000.00 | - |
| Liability for Superfund Remediation | Liability (+) | - | 450,000.00 |
💡 Accountant's Note
Under the 'Superfund' law, a waste company can be held liable for cleaning up a third-party site if they hauled waste there decades ago. When the company receives a PRP letter from the EPA, they must estimate their 'allocation' of the total site cleanup cost (joint and several liability) and record the accrual.
Practitioner & Systems Framework
💻 ERP Architecture
These are 'Legacy Liabilities.' They are often kept on the corporate books and not allocated to specific modern landfills to avoid distorting current site performance.
⚠️ Audit Flags
The 'PRP List' published by the EPA. Auditors cross-reference the company’s names against newly designated Superfund sites.
📄 Required Documentation
EPA PRP notification letter, allocation agreements between different waste haulers (the 'Steering Committee' docs), and actuary/engineering estimates.
