Post-Closure Monitoring Expenditure (ARO Utilization)
Recording the use of the ARO liability to pay for monitoring and maintenance after the landfill has stopped accepting waste.
| Account Name | Type | Debit ($) | Credit ($) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Asset Retirement Obligation (ARO) Liability | Liability (-) | 55,000.00 | - |
| Cash / Accounts Payable | Asset (-) / Liability (+) | - | 55,000.00 |
💡 Accountant's Note
Once a landfill is closed, the company still incurs costs for gas monitoring, groundwater testing, and cap maintenance (often for 30 years). These costs were previously 'accrued' into the ARO liability during the landfill's operating life. Therefore, actual spending reduces the liability rather than hitting the P&L as an expense.
Practitioner & Systems Framework
💻 ERP Architecture
A common error is expensing these costs. They must be mapped to the ARO liability code in AP.
⚠️ Audit Flags
Spending that exceeds the annual 'draw down' expected in the ARO model, which might indicate the liability is under-accrued.
