Intercompany Tipping Fee Elimination (Consolidation)

Eliminating the internal revenue and expense generated when the company's Hauling division disposes of waste at the company's own Landfill division.

Account NameTypeDebit ($)Credit ($)
Revenue - Internal Tipping Fees (Landfill Div)Revenue (-)800,000.00-
Operating Expense - Disposal Costs (Hauling Div)Expense (-)-800,000.00

💡 Accountant's Note

Vertical integration is common in waste management. The Hauling division pays a 'tipping fee' to the Landfill division. While these are valid for divisional P&L tracking, on a consolidated basis, no third-party transaction has occurred. Per ASC 810, all intercompany revenues and expenses must be eliminated. Furthermore, any 'internal profit' built into the landfill's price must be eliminated if that waste remains in a 'cell' that hasn't been fully depleted yet (though in waste, this 'inventory' profit is usually immaterial).

Practitioner & Systems Framework

💻 ERP Architecture

Most ERPs (like NetSuite or SAP) use 'Intercompany Trade' codes to auto-match these. The Landfill scale system must flag 'Internal' trucks vs. 'Third-Party' trucks at the point of entry.

⚠️ Audit Flags

Asymmetry in eliminations. If the Hauling division records a $800k expense but the Landfill only records $750k in internal revenue, the $50k discrepancy will trigger an audit 'top-side' adjustment.
