💡 Accountant's Note
The full annual payment is a liability until service is delivered. Each month, $99 moves from Deferred Revenue to Subscription Revenue as the service obligation is fulfilled.

At payment collection, post the full amount to Deferred Revenue. Set up a 12-month release schedule in the ERP ($99/month) starting from the subscription start date — not the payment date, as these may differ by a few days. The release should be calendar-date-based, not payment-date-based. Track separately from monthly subscriptions so churn analysis can distinguish between annual and monthly cohorts.
⚠️ Audit Flags
At year-end, the Deferred Revenue balance for annual plans should represent exactly the unearned months remaining. Auditors test a sample of annual subscriptions: they calculate the expected remaining deferred balance as (months remaining × monthly rate) and compare to the actual balance. Discrepancies indicate revenue was recognized early or the release schedule has an error.
