How to Defer Revenue When Retail Customers Earn Loyalty Points at Purchase
Splitting a retail sale between recognized revenue and a deferred loyalty points liability under IFRS 15.
| Account Name | Type | Debit ($) | Credit ($) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cash in Hand | Asset (+) | 116.00 | - |
| Sales Revenue | Revenue (+) | - | 95.00 |
| VAT Output Tax Payable (16%) | Liability (+) | - | 16.00 |
| Loyalty Points Liability | Liability (+) | - | 5.00 |
💡 Accountant's Note
Under IFRS 15, loyalty points with standalone value are a separate performance obligation. The estimated redemption value is deferred until points are used or expire.
Practitioner & Systems Framework
💻 ERP Architecture
Integrate the loyalty platform with the ERP to automatically calculate and post the deferred points amount on each transaction. The standalone value of points equals the redemption value per point multiplied by the expected redemption rate (e.g., if 80% of points are redeemed, defer 80% of the points' face value). Reconcile the Loyalty Points Liability to the loyalty platform's outstanding points balance monthly.
⚠️ Audit Flags
The IFRS 15 allocation of transaction price requires a judgment on both the standalone value of points and the expected redemption rate. Auditors will test both assumptions against historical data. Under-deferring inflates current revenue; over-deferring deflates it — both are misstatements. Review the assumptions at least annually.
