Foreign Currency Translation - EUR Investment Remeasurement
Recording the foreign currency translation adjustment on a EUR-denominated portfolio company investment when converting to the fund's USD functional currency at period end.
| Account Name | Type | Debit ($) | Credit ($) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Investments at Fair Value - European Portfolio Co. R (USD) | Asset (+/-) | 250,000.00 | - |
| Net Change in Unrealized Appreciation - FX Component | Income (+) | - | 250,000.00 |
💡 Accountant's Note
Investment companies (ASC 946) translate foreign currency investments at the current period-end spot rate rather than historical rates. Both the underlying investment fair value change AND the currency translation effect flow through the income statement (not OCI), unlike non-investment company entities where currency translation goes to OCI. This simplifies the accounting but creates income volatility from FX movements.
Practitioner & Systems Framework
💻 ERP Architecture
Maintain the investment's fair value in its local currency (EUR) and translate to USD at each period-end spot rate. The total USD fair value change includes both the EUR fair value change and the FX rate change — both are recorded as unrealized appreciation/depreciation. Disclose FX impact separately in LP reports.
⚠️ Audit Flags
Auditors verify period-end spot rates used for translation (typically WM/Reuters 4pm London fix or Bloomberg). The breakout of performance between investment value change and FX translation should be clearly documented for LP reporting.
📄 Required Documentation
EUR-denominated investment valuation report, period-end spot rate source, FX translation calculation workpapers, LP report showing local currency vs. USD returns.
