How to Record LNG Liquefaction Processing Costs as a Direct Production Operating Expense
Expensing the energy, utilities, and contractor costs of liquefying natural gas at the LNG train.
| Account Name | Type | Debit ($) | Credit ($) |
|---|---|---|---|
| LNG Processing Cost (LOE) | Expense (+) | 1,200,000.00 | - |
| Cash / Utilities / Contractor | Asset/Liability (-) | - | 1,200,000.00 |
💡 Accountant's Note
LNG liquefaction is an energy-intensive process. The cost is a direct production expense. Producers with tolling arrangements record a tolling fee rather than the underlying costs.
Practitioner & Systems Framework
💻 ERP Architecture
Liquefaction costs include: fuel gas consumed in the process (value at market price), utilities, catalyst replacement, maintenance, and operator staffing. For integrated LNG producers (who own the liquefaction plant), these are production costs flowing through the P&L. For tolling arrangements (the producer pays a third-party liquefier a fee per MMBTU), only the tolling fee appears in LOE. Calculate the liquefaction cost per MMBTU as a key operational metric — compare to the tolling fee to assess the economics of owned vs. contracted liquefaction.
⚠️ Audit Flags
For integrated LNG projects, the liquefaction cost allocation between the upstream gas production and the downstream LNG liquefaction segment is a related-party pricing issue in group accounts. The transfer price for gas entering the liquefaction plant must be at arm's length. Fuel gas consumed should be measured (metered) rather than estimated — systematic under-measurement of fuel gas consumption artificially reduces LOE.
📄 Required Documentation
Utility invoices (electricity, cooling water), fuel gas consumption meter records, liquefaction plant operating cost budget vs. actual, tolling agreement and fee invoice (if applicable), LNG production record (input volumes and output LNG volumes), plant efficiency report (heat and mass balance), and segment reporting allocation methodology.
