How to Record Lease Operating Expenses and Lifting Costs for a Producing Oil Well

Expensing the day-to-day costs of extracting oil from a producing well as lease operating expenses in the period incurred.

Account NameTypeDebit ($)Credit ($)
Lease Operating Expense (LOE)Expense (+)800,000.00-
Cash / Accounts Payable (Operating Contractors)Asset/Liability (-)-800,000.00

💡 Accountant's Note

Lifting costs (pumping, maintenance, chemicals, water disposal) are the direct costs of producing oil and are expensed as incurred. They are distinct from development costs which are capitalized. The lifting cost per barrel ($/bbl) is a key operational metric.

Practitioner & Systems Framework

💻 ERP Architecture

LOE includes: chemical injection, water handling and disposal, well servicing, artificial lift costs, production chemical purchases, and routine maintenance. These are expensed as incurred under both IFRS and US GAAP — no capitalization is permitted for routine production costs. Track LOE by well and field in the ERP and calculate lifting cost per BOE monthly. Compare to budget and prior period — significant increases warrant investigation of well performance issues or cost inflation.

⚠️ Audit Flags

Auditors test that workover and maintenance costs (routine, expensed) are not being improperly capitalized as development assets. The distinction between a major workover that restores production (expense) and one that adds new reserves (potentially capitalizable) is a key judgment area. They also verify that LOE is allocated correctly between working interest partners per the JOA cost allocation provisions.

📄 Required Documentation

Operating contractor invoices, monthly well production report, LOE cost-per-barrel analysis, field operating budget vs. actual, JV joint interest billing statement showing partner cost allocations, and workover classification memo (expense vs. capitalize) for significant workovers.
