💡 Accountant's Note

Gas is typically sold under long-term take-or-pay contracts at a formula price. Revenue is recognized monthly as gas is delivered. Gas pricing formulas often link to oil prices or market indices.

Practitioner & Systems Framework

💻 ERP Architecture

Calculate gas revenue monthly as: Actual Volume Delivered (MMBtu or MMcf) × Formula Price. The formula price may be fixed, linked to a market index (e.g., JKM for Asian LNG, TTF for European gas, or NBP), or linked to crude oil prices with a lag. Maintain a gas measurement agreement with the buyer specifying the custody transfer metering point, energy content measurement (BTU basis), and reconciliation procedures. Invoice the buyer monthly per the GSA (Gas Sales Agreement) terms.

⚠️ Audit Flags

Gas revenue depends on accurate measurement — auditors verify the metering data against independent meter tickets from both seller and buyer (witness meter). For complex pricing formulas with multiple indices and adjustments (calorific value, pressure, sulfur content), the revenue calculation workbook is tested in detail. Gas revenue recognition for LNG may differ from pipeline gas — LNG is a discrete cargo similar to crude oil (see og-crude-oil-sale).

📄 Required Documentation

Gas Sales Agreement (GSA) with pricing formula, delivery terms, and MVC, monthly nomination and delivery schedule, meter ticket (buyer and seller copies), gas quality analysis certificate (BTU content, composition), monthly invoice and payment receipt, and pricing formula calculation workbook.
