💡 Accountant's Note
When a player is traded, the trading team: (1) Derecognizes the unamortized signing bonus (net of accumulated amortization = $50M − $20M accumulated = $30M net book value), (2) Records any consideration received (the acquired player's contract rights, draft picks, or cash), and (3) Recognizes a gain or loss (consideration FMV − net book value of player traded). Player trades involving only player exchanges (no cash) are measured at the fair value of assets received. Draft pick fair values are market-based estimates. Some sports accountants treat all player exchanges as non-monetary exchanges (based on the value of similar service capacity given up), applying ASC 845.
Practitioner & Systems Framework
💻 ERP Architecture
Player trade accounting requires immediate update to the player contract register. The acquired player's contract is initially recorded at fair value (the fair value of consideration given up or the fair value of the asset received, whichever is more clearly evident). In sports, 'fair value' of a player right is often market-observable from recent comparable trades. The assumed player's future salary obligations (non-guaranteed) are off-balance-sheet until incurred.
⚠️ Audit Flags
Auditors test that the fair value of traded players is determined at the trade date and is reasonably supportable. Market comparables for player values are analyzed using recent trades of similar players. The gain/loss calculation must properly account for the net book value of the outgoing player (cost less accumulated amortization, not gross cost). Draft picks traded have varying fair value methodologies — future round picks are more speculative.
📄 Required Documentation
Trade agreement documentation, acquired player contract terms, traded player contract terms and remaining amortization schedule, fair value assessment of consideration exchanged, draft pick valuation methodology, trade date confirmation.
