How to Record Fixed-Fee Revenue (Milestone-Based)
Recognizing revenue for a flat-fee engagement (e.g., a $10,000 corporate formation) based on the completion of specific phases.
| Account Name | Type | Debit ($) | Credit ($) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Deferred Revenue - Fixed Fee Engagements | Liability (-) | 5,000.00 | - |
| Legal Service Revenue - Flat Fee | Revenue (+) | - | 5,000.00 |
💡 Accountant's Note
For flat-fee matters, the firm often receives the cash upfront (Retainer). Under ASC 606, revenue is recognized as the firm satisfies performance obligations. If the contract specifies milestones (e.g., 50% upon drafting, 50% upon filing), the firm moves the amount from Deferred Revenue to Earned Revenue as each milestone is met.

The 'Billing Type' should be set to 'Fixed Fee' in the Project Management module. Milestone dates should be verified by the lead attorney before the revenue is triggered.

Recognizing 100% of a flat fee upon receipt before any work is performed.
