💡 Accountant's Note
Long-term takaful policies (family takaful) require actuarial reserves for the accumulated savings component and mortality liabilities. The reserve increases as the savings element grows.
Practitioner & Systems Framework
💻 ERP Architecture
Family takaful reserves are calculated by the appointed actuary using a life actuarial system (Prophet, ALFA, or AXIS). The reserve comprises two components: the tabarru' (risk) reserve (equivalent to a mortality reserve) and the participant investment account (PIA) (the accumulated savings/investment component). The PIA is a participant-specific account maintained in the policy admin system. Under IFRS 17, the takaful contract is assessed for its classification — the savings component may require unbundling if it is not closely interrelated with the insurance component.
⚠️ Audit Flags
Auditors appoint an independent actuary to review the family takaful reserve. Key areas include the mortality assumption (is it based on a Shari'a-compliant takaful experience or a conventional life table?), the investment return assumption for the PIA, and the lapse/surrender rate assumption. For IFRS 17, auditors assess whether the savings component of family takaful contracts must be unbundled and accounted for separately under IFRS 9 (as an investment contract) with only the risk component under IFRS 17.
📄 Required Documentation
Actuarial valuation report (takaful-specific), assumption basis for tabarru' rate and investment return, PIA balance per participant (policy admin system), Shari'a board review of actuarial basis, IFRS 17 contract boundary and unbundling assessment, and independent actuary's review.
