💡 Accountant's Note

Reinsurance recoveries reduce the net claims cost. The recovery asset is recognized when the insurer has a contractual right to receive from the reinsurer, typically when the claim is paid or admitted.

Practitioner & Systems Framework

💻 ERP Architecture

Reinsurance recoveries are calculated by the reinsurance accounting module based on the treaty terms (retention, cession percentage, layer structure for XL). The system identifies which treaty responds to each large claim and computes the recoverable amount. In Guidewire, reinsurance recoveries are linked to the claim record. The recoverable is posted as an asset in the GL, offset against claims expense. Recovery invoices or accounts are sent to the reinsurer via the reinsurance broker.

⚠️ Audit Flags

Auditors confirm that recovery is only recognised when there is a clear contractual right — i.e., the claim has been paid by the cedant, or the treaty has an 'as and when' clause. Verify that the recovery calculation correctly applies the treaty retention and participation percentage. For large losses, confirm that proper notice was given to reinsurers within the timeframe specified in the treaty. Assess the credit quality of the reinsurer (rating, financial strength) for ECL purposes under IFRS 9.

📄 Required Documentation

Treaty terms confirming the retention and reinsurer's share, loss notification to reinsurer with acknowledgement, reinsurance recovery calculation, reinsurer's signed account or claims advice, and ECL assessment of the reinsurer counterparty.
