💡 Accountant's Note
Realized losses reduce investment income. Significant realized losses can trigger solvency concerns if they erode the insurer's capital base below regulatory minimums.
Practitioner & Systems Framework
💻 ERP Architecture
Equity disposal losses are processed in the investment accounting system identically to gains — the difference between sale proceeds and carrying value determines whether a gain or loss is recognised. For FVTPL equities, prior unrealised losses may already be in P&L, meaning the realised loss at disposal is only the incremental movement since the last valuation. For FVOCI equities, cumulative losses in OCI are transferred within equity at disposal (not recycled to P&L) — the P&L only sees the current period fair value movement up to the disposal date.
⚠️ Audit Flags
Auditors assess the impact of realized losses on the insurer's solvency margin — material losses may trigger a regulatory capital breach. Confirm that realized losses have been approved by the investment committee or Board and that they are consistent with the investment strategy. Review whether realized losses indicate impairment in the portfolio that has not yet been recognised on other holdings. For FVOCI equities, verify that losses are not being incorrectly recycled to P&L on disposal.
