Mid-Term Endorsement — Return Premium
Refunding a premium reduction when a policyholder reduces their coverage mid-term.
| Account Name | Type | Debit ($) | Credit ($) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Written Premium — Return (Endorsement) | Revenue (-) | 300.00 | - |
| Unearned Premium Reserve (Reduction) | Liability (-) | - | - |
| Cash / Premium Payable (Refund) | Asset/Liability (-) | - | 300.00 |
💡 Accountant's Note
Return premiums are negative written premiums. The UPR is adjusted and the refund is processed. Short-rate penalties may apply on voluntary reductions.
Practitioner & Systems Framework
💻 ERP Architecture
Return premium endorsements are processed in the policy admin system as a negative written premium transaction, reducing both the written premium and the UPR. The refund is processed through the AP module (if by bank transfer) or as a credit against future premiums (if the policyholder has other policies). Short-rate penalty calculations (if applicable) must be configured in the system's cancellation and endorsement rating engine. The revised policy schedule is issued to the policyholder.
⚠️ Audit Flags
Auditors confirm that the return premium is calculated correctly as the unearned pro-rata premium on the reduction in cover, with any short-rate penalty correctly applied per the policy wording. Verify that the UPR is reduced by the same amount as the return premium (ensuring the accounting is symmetrical with how the original premium was deferred). Test that refunds are made only to the policyholder — return premiums should not be redirected to the broker or agent without written authorisation.
📄 Required Documentation
Policyholder's written request for cover reduction, return premium calculation (pro-rata or short-rate), revised policy schedule, refund payment confirmation, and updated UPR schedule.
