Bond Premium Amortization — Monthly
Amortizing the premium paid on a bond purchase, reducing interest income each month.
| Account Name | Type | Debit ($) | Credit ($) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Investment Income — Bond (EIR) | Revenue (-) | 833.00 | - |
| Investment Securities — Bond (Carrying Value) | Asset (-) | - | 833.00 |
💡 Accountant's Note
Premium amortization reduces the bond's carrying value toward par over its life. Each month, the carrying value decreases and effective interest income is lower than the coupon received.
Practitioner & Systems Framework
💻 ERP Architecture
Bond premium amortisation is calculated and posted automatically by the investment accounting system on a monthly basis using the pre-computed EIR. The system generates the amortisation schedule at purchase and posts the monthly journal automatically. The bond's carrying value in the GL should equal the investment system's amortised cost book value — any difference is a reconciling item requiring investigation. The amortisation schedule is recalculated only if the bond's cash flows are revised (e.g., callable bond called, floating rate bond with rate reset).
⚠️ Audit Flags
Auditors agree the EIR amortisation schedule to the investment system and to the GL carrying value at the period end. Confirm that the amortisation is correctly reducing the carrying value toward par (not away from par). Test that the system has correctly handled any special events in the bond's life (coupon payment dates, ex-dividend dates, partial redemptions). For callable bonds, verify that the EIR is calculated to the first call date if the bond is expected to be called.
📄 Required Documentation
Bond amortisation schedule (generated at purchase), monthly amortisation journal entries, GL carrying value reconciliation to investment system, bond coupon payment confirmations, and revised amortisation schedule for any bond modifications.
