How to Record ESOP Share Release
Records the release of shares from an ESOP suspense account to participant accounts based on the fair market value at the time of release.
| Account Name | Type | Debit ($) | Credit ($) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Compensation Expense | Debit | 12,000.00 | - |
| Unearned ESOP Shares | Credit | - | 10,000.00 |
| Additional Paid-In Capital | Credit | - | 2,000.00 |
💡 Accountant's Note
When shares are released from the ESOP suspense account, compensation expense is recognized at fair market value. The contra-equity account (Unearned ESOP Shares) is credited for the original cost, and any difference is recorded in APIC.
