💡 Accountant's Note
Training costs borne by the franchisee (travel, hotel, franchisor-charged training fee, and labor cost of personnel in training) are expensed as incurred per ASC 720-15. These costs cannot be capitalized. For new multi-unit operators, total training costs across all staff can be significant. Some franchisors offer virtual training options that reduce franchisee travel costs.
Practitioner & Systems Framework
💻 ERP Architecture
Classify all training costs as period expenses. Do not include in the capitalized cost of the franchise right or pre-opening asset. If the franchisor requires ongoing retraining or system updates, those costs are also expensed as incurred.
⚠️ Audit Flags
Auditors confirm training costs are properly expensed rather than capitalized. Large training cost accruals near period end without supporting invoices may indicate improper deferral.
📄 Required Documentation
Travel booking confirmations, hotel receipts, per diem records, employee timesheets showing training period, training fee payment to franchisor.
