How to Record BNPL Late Fees and Penalties
Accounting for revenue generated when a Buy Now Pay Later user misses a scheduled payment.
| Account Name | Type | Debit ($) | Credit ($) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Consumer Loan Receivable (Late Fee Component) | Asset (+) | 10.00 | - |
| Fee Revenue - Late Penalties | Revenue (+) | - | 10.00 |
💡 Accountant's Note
When a BNPL payment is missed, the system automatically assesses a late fee. Under ASC 310, fees that are 'contractually due' are recognized as revenue. However, if the account is already in default, the firm must evaluate if the fee is actually 'collectible.' Many FinTechs choose to recognize late fees only upon cash collection (Cash Basis) to avoid overstating revenue on bad loans.
Practitioner & Systems Framework
💻 ERP Architecture
The loan management system (LMS) should flag 'Non-Accrual' status for delinquent users. Once flagged, the G/L should stop automatically recognizing late fees to prevent phantom revenue.
⚠️ Audit Flags
Late fee 'Cap' compliance. Most jurisdictions (and the CFPB) have strict caps on late fees. Auditors will test for compliance to ensure the revenue isn't subject to regulatory clawbacks or fines.
📄 Required Documentation
