How to Record Luxury Packaging and Branded Supplies Inventory
Accounting for the high-cost branded boxes, dustbags, and shopping bags that accompany luxury purchases.
| Account Name | Type | Debit ($) | Credit ($) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Inventory - Branded Packaging & Supplies | Asset (+) | 15,000.00 | - |
| Accounts Payable - Packaging Supplier | Liability (+) | - | 15,000.00 |
| Cost of Goods Sold - Packaging | Expense (+) | 2,000.00 | - |
| Inventory - Branded Packaging & Supplies | Asset (-) | - | 2,000.00 |
💡 Accountant's Note
In luxury, the box and dustbag are 'Inventory' rather than 'G&A Supplies' because they are an integral part of the product delivered to the customer. They are held on the balance sheet at cost and expensed to COGS as they are consumed (usually based on a 'Bill of Materials' link to the main garment sale).
Practitioner & Systems Framework
💻 ERP Architecture
Include packaging items in the 'Kit' or 'BOM' for the finished garment. When a bag is sold, the system should auto-credit the Packaging inventory account.
⚠️ Audit Flags
Obsolescence. If the brand changes its logo or 'visual identity,' all old branded packaging inventory must be written off immediately as it can no longer be used.
📄 Required Documentation
Packaging purchase orders, warehouse count of boxes/dustbags, and the 'Visual Identity' transition plan.
