How to Record an Affiliate Commission Cash Payout to an Influencer

Settling the commissions payable liability when transferring earned commissions to an affiliate partner.

Account NameTypeDebit ($)Credit ($)
Commissions PayableLiability (-)150.00-
Cash / PayPal / StripeAsset (-)-150.00

💡 Accountant's Note

This clears the liability created during the sale. The expense was already recorded when the sale happened; now we are just settling the debt.

Practitioner & Systems Framework

💻 ERP Architecture

Run a 'Commissions Due' report from your affiliate platform before processing payments, filtered for the payout period. Match each payout to the corresponding Commissions Payable sub-ledger balance per affiliate. For influencers paid via PayPal or Stripe, the transfer confirmation serves as the settlement document. Ensure withholding tax obligations are assessed before payment if the influencer is a non-resident.

⚠️ Audit Flags

Auditors reconcile Commissions Payable to the affiliate platform's payout history: (1) Unpaid commissions older than 90 days need explanation, (2) Payments made to affiliates with no corresponding accrual indicate an expense recorded twice or an unauthorized payment, (3) Large round-number payments warrant additional scrutiny.

📄 Required Documentation

Affiliate payout report (affiliate ID, earned commissions, payout date), bank transfer confirmation or PayPal/Stripe payment receipt, Commissions Payable sub-ledger reconciliation, and where applicable, withholding tax certificate issued to the influencer.
