💡 Accountant's Note

E-commerce stores registered for VAT in Jordan must charge 16% on taxable goods. Some product categories (basic foods, medicines) are exempt. The tax is collected on behalf of the ISTD.

Practitioner & Systems Framework

💻 ERP Architecture

Configure tax codes in the ERP by product category: standard-rated (16%), zero-rated (0%), and exempt. The tax code should automatically apply when a customer order is invoiced. VAT amounts should flow directly to the VAT Output Tax Payable account without manual intervention. Monthly, the VAT Output ledger is reconciled to the VAT return before submission to ISTD.

⚠️ Audit Flags

ISTD may audit VAT compliance: (1) Is VAT charged on all standard-rated products — no categories incorrectly classified as exempt? (2) Does the VAT Output balance in the GL match the output tax reported on the VAT return? (3) Is the gross VAT inclusive price shown to customers and is the breakdown of pre-tax price + VAT on invoices? (4) Are free samples and barter transactions (like influencer seedings) assessed for output VAT?

📄 Required Documentation

Sales invoices showing VAT breakdown, VAT output tax register by period, product category tax classification schedule, monthly VAT return filed with ISTD, and reconciliation of VAT return to GL output tax account.
