How to Record a Merchant Cash Advance Drawdown from a Fintech Lender

Accounting for a lump-sum advance against future sales revenue, with the factor fee treated as a finance cost.

Account NameTypeDebit ($)Credit ($)
Cash in BankAsset (+)20,000.00-
Merchant Cash Advance PayableLiability (+)-23,000.00
Unearned Discount (Finance Cost)Contra-Liability (+)3,000.00-

💡 Accountant's Note

Merchant cash advances charge a factor rate (e.g., 1.15x) on the amount advanced. The total repayable ($23,000) is the liability; the $3,000 cost is a finance charge amortized as repayments are made.

Practitioner & Systems Framework

💻 ERP Architecture

MCAs are technically not loans — they are a purchase of future receivables. However, for accounting purposes under IFRS, they are treated as financial liabilities. The liability is the total repayable amount; the difference between cash received and total repayable is the finance cost. This cost is amortized using the effective interest method as daily repayments are made. MCAs often have no fixed term — repayment duration depends on sales volume.

⚠️ Audit Flags

MCAs have an effective APR that is extremely high (often 50–150% APR). Auditors assess: (1) Is the full repayable amount disclosed as a liability, not just the net cash received? (2) Is the finance cost amortized (not recognized upfront or deferred to the end)? (3) Are all outstanding MCAs disclosed in the notes if material? (4) Does the MCA agreement contain any security interest over assets that requires disclosure?

📄 Required Documentation

MCA agreement (advance amount, factor rate, total repayable, repayment mechanism), drawdown confirmation and bank receipt, repayment schedule (actual daily deductions), amortization table (principal vs. finance cost per repayment), and outstanding balance at reporting date.
