How to Record a Kitting or Bundling Assembly in the Warehouse

Reclassifying individual product components into a new bundle SKU when assembling kits in the warehouse.

Account NameTypeDebit ($)Credit ($)
Merchandise Inventory (Bundle SKU)Asset (+)80.00-
Merchandise Inventory (Component A)Asset (-)-45.00
Merchandise Inventory (Component B)Asset (-)-35.00

💡 Accountant's Note

Kitting transfers the cost of individual components into a new bundle SKU. The total inventory value remains unchanged — it is simply reclassified from component items to a bundle item.

Practitioner & Systems Framework

💻 ERP Architecture

Set up a Bill of Materials (BOM) in the ERP for each bundle SKU, listing the component items and quantities. When the kitting work order is completed in the WMS, the ERP automatically relieves the component inventory and increases the bundle SKU inventory. Any assembly labor or packaging costs added during kitting should be included in the bundle cost. Maintain traceability from bundle back to components for cost accuracy.

⚠️ Audit Flags

Kitting entries are internal inventory transfers — no expense should be recognized unless assembly labor or consumables are incurred. Auditors test: (1) Component inventory is fully relieved when bundles are built — no double-counting of components and bundles, (2) Bundle cost equals the sum of component costs plus any additional assembly costs, (3) Disassembled kits (un-kitting) correctly reverse the entry and restore component inventory.

📄 Required Documentation

Bill of Materials per bundle SKU, kitting work order (components consumed, bundle units produced, assembly date), updated inventory movement report confirming component relief and bundle creation, assembly labor cost allocation (if applicable), and cycle count confirmation of bundle SKUs.
