If a payment is initially authorized but subsequently fails (insufficient funds, fraud detection), the revenue entry must be reversed. The order is cancelled and inventory is not released.

The ERP should match incoming gateway reversal events to the original transaction and auto-reverse the revenue entry. Failed payment reversals should net to zero — the revenue entry and its reversal cancel out. Auditors check: (1) No inventory was released for failed payments, (2) Failed payment reversal entries are matched 1:1 to the original transaction — no orphaned reversals without an original entry, (3) High rates of late payment failures (authorized, dispatched, then reversed) indicate a weak pre-payment verification process.
