How to Calculate and Record NAV for a Cryptocurrency Investment Fund Under Investment Company Accounting

Recording the periodic NAV (Net Asset Value) calculation for a cryptocurrency investment fund — where all holdings are measured at fair value and changes flow through the income statement.

💡 Accountant's Note

Cryptocurrency investment funds (hedge funds, venture funds, ETFs) are investment companies under IFRS 10/IAS 28 or ASC 946 (US GAAP investment companies). Investment companies measure ALL investments at FAIR VALUE through profit or loss — regardless of whether the underlying investment would normally be measured at cost under IAS 38 or amortised cost under IFRS 9. The NAV = total FV of all crypto holdings minus all fund liabilities. Changes in NAV are recognised through the income statement.

Practitioner & Systems Framework

💻 ERP Architecture

Fund NAV is calculated daily (for open-ended funds) or at each reporting date (for closed-ended funds). Fair values are obtained from reference exchanges for each held cryptocurrency. For illiquid altcoins or tokens in early-stage blockchain projects, Level 3 fair value measurements are required — using valuation models (DCF, comparable transaction analysis, token multiple approaches). The fund's net income = sum of FV changes on all holdings + realised gains/losses on disposals + interest and staking income − fund expenses.

⚠️ Audit Flags

Fund auditors confirm each cryptocurrency holding quantity against custody records at period-end. Test each cryptocurrency's fair value against market prices from reference exchanges. For Level 3 holdings (illiquid tokens), the valuation methodology and key assumptions are scrutinised. The completeness of the fund's holding schedule (all tokens included, no off-balance-sheet positions) is tested. Performance fees (carried interest) based on NAV require specific timing and waterfall analysis.

📄 Required Documentation

Fund NAV calculation at period-end (all holdings at FV), custody platform confirmation of all holdings, fair value source for each cryptocurrency (Level 1/2/3 hierarchy), Level 3 valuation models and assumptions, performance fee calculation, investor capital accounts (contributed capital + allocated income), management fee accrual, and fund financial statements (Statement of Assets and Liabilities, Statement of Operations).
