BESS - Grid Charging Cost
Recording the cost of electricity purchased from the grid to charge a Battery Energy Storage System during off-peak hours.
| Account Name | Type | Debit ($) | Credit ($) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cost of Goods Sold - Grid Electricity | Expense (+) | 12,000.00 | - |
| Accounts Payable - ISO/Utility | Liability (+) | - | 12,000.00 |
💡 Accountant's Note
The cost to charge the battery is effectively the inventory cost of the power. However, because power cannot be easily stored long-term and is constantly cycled, it is typically expensed directly to COGS as the battery charges and discharges in the same month.

💻 ERP Architecture
Depending on the grid operator, charging costs and discharging revenues might be settled net. However, accounting standards usually require gross presentation in the GL.
⚠️ Audit Flags
Verification of negative locational marginal pricing (LMP). In some cases, the battery is paid to charge (negative pricing), which is treated as revenue rather than a cost reduction.
📄 Required Documentation
