💡 Accountant's Note
Manufacturers provide dealers with holdbacks (a percentage of MSRP retained by the manufacturer and returned to the dealer, typically 2-3% of MSRP) and various retail incentives (per-unit bonus for volume targets, model-specific stair-step incentives). These are recognized as a reduction in vehicle cost (or additional revenue) when earned — upon retail sale for per-unit incentives or upon achievement of volume targets for stair-step incentives.
Practitioner & Systems Framework
💻 ERP Architecture
Manufacturer incentives are tracked in the DMS and reconciled monthly against the manufacturer's dealer statement. Holdback is credited to the dealer when a vehicle is retailed — it reduces the effective cost of the vehicle and improves gross profit. Stair-step volume incentives require careful accounting: if the incentive is earned only upon reaching a volume threshold, it is recognized only when the threshold is achieved (IFRS 15 variable consideration constraint — highly probable to be earned before recognition). The manufacturer's monthly statement must be reconciled to the DMS incentive claims to identify disputes.
⚠️ Audit Flags
Auditors test manufacturer incentive receivables against the manufacturer's dealer statement at period-end. For stair-step incentives near a threshold, assess whether the target is 'highly probable' to be met before recognizing the full incentive — premature recognition of unearned stair-step incentives is a common error. Reconcile total incentive claims submitted to the manufacturer to incentives paid and received. Review for any incentive clawbacks (vehicles returned to manufacturer, misrepresented sales) that reduce previously recognized income.
