Unharvested Crops (Standing Crops)
Recognizing the value of crops still in the field at year-end.
| Account Name | Type | Debit ($) | Credit ($) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Biological Assets (Crops) | Asset (+) | 2,000.00 | - |
| Unrealized Gain on Crop Growth | Revenue (+) | - | 2,000.00 |
💡 Accountant's Note
Crops in the field are biological assets. Even if not harvested, if they have grown, their increased value must be recognized as profit.
Practitioner & Systems Framework
💻 ERP Architecture
At each reporting period-end, the farm management system must provide an estimate of standing crop area (hectares) and growth stage for each crop type. The fair value of standing crops is typically estimated using a discounted expected future harvest value: expected yield per hectare × expected market price at harvest, less estimated costs to complete harvest, discounted back to the measurement date. For crops close to harvest maturity, the discount is minimal and the fair value approximates the forward selling price net of harvesting costs. For crops in early growth stages, a lower fraction of the expected harvest value is recognized. In drought years or where crop failure is likely, the fair value may be significantly below a normal season estimate.
⚠️ Audit Flags
(1) Growth stage assessment — is the crop's stage of biological development correctly assessed by an agronomist or experienced farm manager? Overestimating maturity inflates the fair value gain. (2) Yield and price assumptions — are yield estimates based on current season observations (not prior year actuals), and is the price based on current forward market quotations (not historical prices)? (3) Cost-to-complete deduction — are all remaining harvesting costs (contract harvesting, transport, levies) deducted from the expected proceeds to arrive at fair value? Omitting these costs overstates the biological asset.
