Practitioner & Systems Framework

💻 ERP Architecture

In practice, most dairy farmers do not formally recognize milk as an inventory balance on their books — milk is collected daily by the processor (dairy factory) and payment arrives in monthly or fortnightly milk statements. For financial reporting purposes, milk produced at period-end but not yet collected or paid for is a receivable (or inventory if physically on farm). The fair value per litre or per kilogram of milksolids is based on the processor's announced milk price or the spot market price. Dairy farmers operating under season-long milk supply contracts often have a fixed advance price with a seasonal adjustment — the adjustment creates a variable consideration element that must be estimated using the IFRS 15 expected value method.

⚠️ Audit Flags

(1) Period-end milk receivable — is milk produced in the last days of the reporting period (before the factory's collection date) correctly accrued as revenue and receivable? (2) Seasonal milk price true-up — if the processor announces a final price adjustment after year-end, is it reflected as a subsequent event? (3) For large dairy operations maintaining bulk milk tanks: is the quantity in tank at year-end physically measured and valued?

📄 Required Documentation
