Depreciation of Farm Machinery (Straight-Line or Units-of-Production)
Recording periodic depreciation on farm equipment using straight-line or units-of-production (hours/hectares worked) method.
| Account Name | Type | Debit ($) | Credit ($) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Depreciation Expense — Farm Machinery | Expense (+) | 7,500.00 | - |
| Accumulated Depreciation — Farm Machinery | Contra-Asset (+) | - | 7,500.00 |
💡 Accountant's Note
Agricultural machinery depreciation may be more accurately reflected by a UNITS-OF-PRODUCTION method rather than straight-line, because farm machinery usage is highly seasonal — a combine harvester may be intensively used for 6 weeks at harvest, then idle for 10 months. The units-of-production method bases depreciation on: (Depreciable Amount ÷ Total Expected Productive Units) × Units Used in Period. For a harvester expected to work 5,000 hours over its life: if it worked 400 hours this season, depreciation = (Cost − Residual) × 400 / 5,000. Straight-line is simpler and acceptable when usage is relatively consistent. In either case, depreciation is charged to agricultural operating expense and may be allocated between Cost of Production (directly related to crop production) and General Farm Overhead depending on the management accounting system.
Practitioner & Systems Framework
💻 ERP Architecture
For units-of-production, integrate with the equipment log (engine hours meter readings) to automate the per-period depreciation calculation. Annual review of total expected productive hours ensures the rate remains appropriate as wear data accumulates.
⚠️ Audit Flags
Method selection rationale — is there evidence that the chosen method best reflects consumption of the asset? Consistent application across periods.
📄 Required Documentation
Engine hour logs, depreciation policy, useful life and residual value review documentation, and depreciation calculation schedule.
